Electrical winch converters

Winches driven by electrical motors and frequency converters have been used in the offshore business since 1993. As technology is advancing and the benefits are increasing, more and more operators select electrical solutions for their handling systems.

Industrilink has vast experience in development and engineering of high performance frequency converter systems for electrical winches.

Industrilink supplies complete drive systems engineered and tailored to match the motor and winch requirements.

Included in the drive cabinet is rectifier, inverters, braking chopper and motor starters for auxiliary motors. Depending on the network EMC-requirements, the rectifier can be a diode rectifier, Non-regenerative Front End or an Active Front End.

The inverter accurately controls speed and torque of the motor, enabling smooth and extremely precise control of the winch. The high performance is achieved regardless of motor and unit size. The inverters are preloaded with standard software including winch and crane functionalities to achieve the highest level of safety.

The sturdiness and controllability of an Industrilink converter system makes it ideal for an Active Heave Compensated winch.

When braking while lowering a load, electrical energy is regenerated. The regenerated energy can be dissipated through a braking chopper to a braking resistor or regenerated to the supply network by use of an Active Front End.

Braking resistors can be sea water, fresh water or air cooled.

Active Heave Compensation is a cyclical mode that is consuming power from the network or regenerating power back from the winch.  To reduce the amount of energy consumed during Active Heave operation and to reduce the power peaks to a lower continuous power level Industrilink introduces the option to use a Kinetic Energy Recovery System, KERS.

Redundancy for the system can be built in at several different levels according to customer demands. The frequency converter system can be arranged as a common DC-bus line up, redundant DC-bus line up or as separate converters.

Delivery is done according to most common standards used for onshore, offshore and marine applications. DNV approval is available if required.

The drive cabinet is a complete electrical package with all required terminations, protections and EMC shielding equipment for input power and motor output power, located for easy access during installation and hook-up.

Both air and liquid cooled converters are available. When space is limited, liquid cooling is frequently preferred, reducing the total size of the electrical equipment.
